John Gettinger, 81-year-old farmer of Coal Creek neighborhood northwest of Homewood was killed Saturday afternoon about 3:30 when a model T Ford coupe he was driving collided head-on with a Nash sedan at the foot of Tequa hill west of Williamsburg on highway US50S.
Gettinger's head was crushed, death apparently being instantaneous according to DR. J. F. Barr, coroner.
Gettinger's car was on the wrong side of the highway, Milburn said, making it impossible for him to avoid the crash on the slippery pavement. Sheriff Harry Chohrane investigated the accident.
Mr Gettinger was born December 9, 1857 in Union City, Ind., son of John and Dorthy (Helm) Gettinger. He was married to Alice Blankenbeker October 21, 1866 in Ottawa. Mr. Gettinger came here 58 years ago from Union city.
Surviving relatives are the widow, five daughters and a son, Mrs. T. S. McLeod and Mrs. J. M. Rainbolt, Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. L. C. Miller, Pomona; Mrs. L. J. Cain, La Cygne; Mrs. F. H. Davis, Ottawa and D. E. Gettinger, Sapulpa, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; three brothers, Willard Gettinger, Anderson, Ind., Jonas and Daniel H. Gettinger, Union City, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Ester Fouts, Economy, Ind., and Mrs Ollie Repp, Union City, Ind.
Mr Gettinger was an active member of the Greewwood church. He had taught a Sunday school class for a number of years, and taught his class for the last time January 8. The funeral is to be at Greenwood church Tuesday afternooon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. J. W. Bayles officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
